The nautilus, meet the forgotten past.

Nautilus and diver (lifou new caledonia)

Night dives in lifou gives good probabilities to meet nautilus.

That's the reason why a BBC team has been working in Lifou during 15 days to do a report about this animal, using the support of our center.

Nautilus live in the very depths during day time (400 meters) and come up during night time to get feed. The specific topography of the Santal Wood Bay which have a very deep tip close to the shore, make this place strategic to nautilus watching.

The best time to observe them are during the few or no moon nights, you've got 2 over 3 chances to see them.

Night fauna and photography

Night dives with Lifou Fun Dive have got the particularity to be late, with a departure around 9pm instead of 6pm in most of others diving centers. At this time the night wildlife is very active, that's why, in addition of nautilus, you would also meet scyllarid lobster, cuttlefish, octopus, cone ... who are night outgoing to fish in the middle of coral and gorgonia.

Turtles, by themselves or in group, are also way easier to watch at that late time, flying with elegance and carefree attitude between two currents.

Of course, night is also the field of photographers with models who are way easiest to locate and to aim than during daytime. Some of those depth's residents are still asleep and offer themselves to your lens, make the most of it !
